This morning as I was opening my Oula.One class, I talked about how something recently dawned on me about “taking time for yourself.” I am the first to admit that I have probably started several Facebook posts inviting people to class by saying “Take time out of your day…” But the more that I think about this, the more I am realizing what an unhealthy thought process this is for self-care. When we consider pressing the ‘pause’ button on our lives to do things like attend a class or go for a walk or sit by ourselves in nature, what we are saying is that we have to sacrifice our time doing “life” to self care.
This is crazy! No wonder we feel anxious, overwhelmed and tired! Taking care of yourself and your own needs is not separate from your life, it does not require stopping your life and your DO-ing in exchange for BE-ing and it certainly is not selfish. We need to start taking up more space in our own lives! We need to prioritize things that keep us feeling energized and alive, grounded and grateful. I am going to be very conscious from now on about how I speak about doing things just for ourselves. It’s not a “break” from your life or a “treat” to focus on you. This IS your life and finding a way to integrate taking care of yourself along with your other responsibilities and roles should be normalized much more than it is.
